Open floor plans and energy efficiency sought after among new homebuyers

by Lori McGinnis Black, March 7, 2014

Midlands Business Journal

Open floor plans, tiled showers, walk-in pantry's and energy efficiency are in demand requests in today's new residential construction market.

Most new homebuyers today are looking for open floor plans along with 11 foot ceilings and tiled showers in the master bathroom, said Kamie Mielke, Realtor representative for Regency Homes.

Specific kitchen features like granite countertops are among the most sought after in new home construction, said Tracy Paulsen, Realtor with CBSHome Real Estate who represents Al Belt Custom Homes.

Energy efficiency is very important in new home building today, and customers of Prairie Homes are opting for efficient geothermal heating and cooling systems, said owner Terry Bouge.

Storage is always important in a house, and people are achieving it with custom closets and garage organization, said Ed Abersfeller, owner of Storage Concepts Inc.

Regency homes is seeing large demand for 11-foot ceilings, open floor plans, drop zones and walk-in pantries, Mielke said.

"Pantries are huge. Every one of our homes has them," she said.

Most of the pantries built by Regency are walk-through pantries. Homeowners enter the pantry from the garage and walk through it into the kitchen.

People like the so-called "drop zones" because they are areas where people can hang up their coats, take off their shoes and leave other items, Miekle said.

Other in demand items are three-car garages, large windows that let in a lot of light, wood floors and iron balusters, she said.
